Navigating My Master’s Thesis Journey with the PsyEng Group at Aalto University

Writing my master’s thesis with the Engineering Psychology group has been an incredible journey of discovery, challenge, and growth. As a Human-Computer Interaction and Design (HCID) graduate at Aalto University, I explored how user-centered design can enhance the tools used by aviation experts to drive sustainability in the aerospace industry. With the guidance of my supervisor, Robin, I conducted in-depth research, engaged with users, and developed prototypes to improve workflows and decision-making.

Throughout the process, I was encouraged to think critically, experiment with methodologies, and engage deeply with users. Robin’s strong emphasis on research-driven design allowed me to apply a mix of qualitative interviews, field studies, and iterative prototyping, ensuring that my findings were both user-focused and actionable. The support and feedback I received helped me refine my approach, balance academic rigor with industry relevance, and push my work further.

This thesis was not just about aviation technology. It was about understanding people, workflows, and decision-making under pressure. I’m incredibly grateful for the mentorship, resources, and research culture at Aalto, which shaped my ability to translate complex problems into meaningful solutions.

As I complete this chapter, I carry forward the lessons learned, not just in UX research, but in the value of curiosity, collaboration, and user-first thinking in shaping the future of design.
