Salla Nicholls is Aalto University’s first bachelor graduate in Engineering Psychology!

I, Salla Nicholls, am proud to be the first Bachelor of Science to graduate with a major in Engineering Psychology from Aalto University! These years have equipped me not only with the technical skills of an engineer, but also with a deep understanding of the complex relationship between humans and technology.

My studies in Engineering Psychology have included mathematics, programming, psychology, physics, acoustics and human-computer interaction. Courses have consisted of project work, exams, assignments, user testing, research and visualization. A bit of everything. That is the richness of Engineering Psychology. It provides us a versatile toolbox for addressing the current and future problems in the interaction between people and technology. At the same time, it allows each of us the opportunity to focus on our individual interests – with mine being mathematics and operations research. In addition, working as a research assistant in the Engineering Psychology research group alongside wonderful researchers has given me a valuable and inspiring opportunity to apply and broaden my knowledge and understanding even further!

As AI continues to integrate into our workflows, the understanding of how we interact with technology is more important than ever. Understanding that, to me, is the very essence of engineering psychology: the hows and whys of human-technology interaction and applying that for a better future!”
